Legendary R&B and neo-soul singer D Angelo has died at the age of 51, less than a year after the tragic death of his former partner, Angie Stone. His family confirmed the news on October 14, 2025, saying the Grammy-winning artist passed away following a battle with cancer.

Born Michael Eugene Archer, D’Angelo rose to fame in the mid-1990s with hits like “Brown Sugar” and “Lady.” His smooth voice and soulful sound helped shape the neo-soul movement, influencing artists for decades to come.

His relationship with Angie Stone began in the mid-1990s when the two collaborated on D’Angelo’s debut album Brown Sugar. Their musical and romantic partnership led to the birth of their son, Michael Archer II, in 1997. He now performs under the stage name Swayvo Twain.

Though their relationship ended in 1999, D’Angelo and Stone remained connected through music and their shared family. In a resurfaced interview clip, D’Angelo once said, “After my son’s birth, I started writing for the album. This album is dedicated to my son.”

Stone, a Grammy-nominated artist herself, died in a car crash in March 2025 at the age of 63 while traveling with her band in Alabama. Her sudden passing deeply saddened the music community.

D’Angelo’s family released a heartfelt statement through RCA Records, saying:

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life. After a courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home.”

Fans and fellow artists, including Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, and Jennifer Hudson, have paid tribute to the late soul icon, remembering him as “one of one” and a true musical visionary.
