Every Halloween, 14-year-old Silas Brown from Derry, New Hampshire, proves that creativity and determination know no limits. Despite being bound to a wheelchair due to cerebral palsy and epilepsy, Silas celebrates Halloween in a way that inspires everyone who sees him.

His parents, Melly and Matt Brown, have made it their mission to ensure that their son experiences life to the fullest. From customizing their home for accessibility to even building a wheelchair-friendly ice rink in their backyard, they’ve gone above and beyond to adapt to Silas’ needs.

But what really sets the Browns apart is their incredible Halloween tradition. Each year, they design handmade costumes that perfectly fit Silas’ wheelchair. Over the years, he’s transformed into everything from a giant mouse trap to news anchor Ron Burgundy. The couple combines their skills — Matt handles welding and structure work, while Melly adds the creative details — turning Silas’ wheelchair into a masterpiece every time.

This Halloween, the family took on their biggest challenge yet: creating four wheelchair-accessible costumes representing New England’s top sports teams. Although the designs were simpler, the joy of sharing them with other families made the effort deeply rewarding.

For Melly, Halloween is more than just dressing up. “It’s one of the few holidays without expectations,” she said. “We just dress him up and show up — that’s it. It’s about joy.”

The Browns now donate Silas’ old costumes to other children in wheelchairs across the country, spreading happiness and inspiration far beyond their hometown.

Silas may not communicate verbally, but his bright spirit and humor shine through every costume. One thing’s for sure — when it comes to Halloween, this New Hampshire teen always steals the show.
