Monday, Oct. 13, is one of those unique days in the U.S. when two holidays are observed at the same time — Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. And yes, to answer the main question: Columbus Day is a federal holiday.

The day has been recognized by the federal government since 1892 and is observed every year on the second Monday in October. Traditionally, it celebrates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 and has also become a way for Italian-American communities to honor their heritage.

In recent years, however, more states and cities have shifted to celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead, recognizing Native American history and culture. While not a federal holiday, it is officially observed in several parts of the country alongside Columbus Day.

Because Columbus Day is a federal holiday, many government offices and courts are closed today. That includes post offices — so there will be no regular mail delivery or retail postal services. Banks such as Wells Fargo, Chase, Citibank, and Bank of America are also closed, though ATMs and mobile apps remain available.

If you’re waiting for a delivery, there’s some good news — UPS and FedEx are both operating normally, and their store locations are open. The stock market is also open for regular trading, but the U.S. bond market is closed for the day.

As for your daily errands, most grocery stores, restaurants, and retail outlets are open and running regular hours. Still, it’s always smart to double-check before heading out.
